A New Milestone for Cardiovascular Research in Ethiopia

Addis Ababa University (AAU) has reached a significant milestone with the launch of the AAU Cardiovascular Research Hub, established in partnership with the Global Heartcare Foundation (USA). This new initiative represents an important step toward strengthening cardiovascular research, expanding professional training opportunities, and building greater self-reliance in Ethiopia and other low- and middle-income countries.

The Hub was founded with a bold vision: to address critical gaps in cardiovascular research, generate high-quality scientific evidence, and foster collaboration among researchers and institutions. By supporting basic, biomedical, translational, and clinical research, the Hub will help create the knowledge needed to improve heart health and advance patient care throughout the region.

Its mission extends beyond research alone. The AAU Cardiovascular Research Hub aims to build sustainable research capacity, mentor emerging scientists and healthcare professionals, and cultivate a vibrant network dedicated to addressing cardiovascular disease. Over time, the Hub aspires to become a recognized Center of Excellence in Cardiovascular Research for East Africa, serving as a catalyst for innovation, collaboration, and impact.

The need for this work is urgent. Cardiovascular disease continues to place a growing burden on communities across Africa, yet locally generated research and evidence remain limited. Without region-specific data and solutions, healthcare providers and policymakers often face challenges in addressing the unique needs of their populations. By investing in research capacity and evidence generation, the Hub seeks to help bridge this gap and support informed decisions that can improve cardiovascular outcomes across the continent.

Equally important is the collaborative spirit at the heart of this initiative. The partnership between Addis Ababa University and the Global Heartcare Foundation reflects a shared commitment to advancing cardiovascular health through knowledge, innovation, and international cooperation.

As the Hub begins its work, its leaders are focused on building strong partnerships and expanding opportunities for collaboration.

“This is only the beginning. We look forward to building meaningful partnerships with researchers and institutions across Africa and beyond,” said Dr. Dejuma Yadeta, Program Director of the AAU Cardiovascular Research Hub, and Dr. Vibhu R. Kshettry, President of the Global Heartcare Foundation.

The launch of the AAU Cardiovascular Research Hub is more than the opening of a new research center. It is an investment in local expertise, scientific discovery, and healthier futures for communities across Ethiopia, East Africa, and beyond. Through collaboration, capacity building, and a commitment to excellence, this initiative has the potential to shape the future of cardiovascular care for generations to come.
